Today, natural gas is the most important energy source in Hungary: it accounts for more than 40% of the primary energy sources used. Underground storage facilities play a crucial role in meeting winter peak demands, and in establishing and maintaining the security of supply, since on a colder winter day approximately half of the country’s natural gas supply is coming from storage facilities.
Being the only natural gas storage company in Hungary, E.ON Földgáz Storage operates five underground storage facilities, with a total 3,720 million cubic meters of mobile gas capacity and 50.5 million cubic meters of withdrawal capacity per day. One of the company’s prime goals is expanding the present Hungarian storage capacities – not just to ensure the winter gas supply for Hungary in the long run, but also to become a key gas distribution hub in the Central-European region.
